Fans of James Coburn, take note: two of his lesser-known films will be revived on DVD in January.  The Last Hard Men is a revenge-themed western based upon a novel by Brian Garfield of Death Wish fame and pairs Coburn with Charlton Heston.  Sky Riders combines the hostage-situation thriller with a unique action hook in the form of hang-gliding.  It also features another old-school tough guy actor in Robert Culp.  Both will feature fresh transfers and will be presented on a two-for-one disc.  Read on for all the kick-ass Coburn details…

On January 17 Shout! Factory will release The Last Hard Men/Sky Riders, two action-packed films featuring James Coburn on one DVD. Special features include new anamorphic widescreen transfers, theatrical trailers and TV spots, and a stills gallery.

In The Last Hard Men, directed by Andrew V. McLaglen (McLintock, Chisum), and based on the novel Gun Down by Brian Garfield (Death Wish), a group of convicts on a road gang escape from custody. One of the convicts is Zach Provo (James Coburn), sent to prison by former lawman Sam Burgade (Charlton Heston), who may also have killed Provo’s wife. Provo plans to kidnap Burgade´s daughter, hoping to prompt Burgade to strap on his guns and come after him so he can seek his revenge.

In Sky Riders, the wife and children of industrialist Jonas Bracken (Robert Culp) are kidnapped by a terrorist group, and after several failed attempts by the police to get them back, the wife’s ex-husband Jim McCabe (James Coburn) is brought in to rescue the family. McCabe pulls out all the stops and hires a crew of professional hang gliders to help him get to the terrorists’ mountaintop lair. Also starring Susannah York and John Beck, Sky Riders was directed by Douglas Hickox (Zulu Dawn).
