Welcome to the second album in the Harmless ‘Mixology’ series. The first album kicked off with New York’s independent Salsoul label – probably the most influential Disco label of all time throughout it’s heyday in the mid to late 1970s.
However, the whole point of the ‘Mixology’ series is to highlight the output of different labels throughout all the eras of Dance music’s illustrious history. So it gives us great pleasure to welcome another iconic label into the fold – New York’s Sam Records – a label which not only spanned the 1970’s Disco era successfully with international smashes from Gary’s Gang and John Davis & the Monster Orchestra, but also translated perfectly into the 1980s via its consistent cutting edge releases and productions.
Originally started by U.S. music biz veteran Sam Weiss in 1976, Sam Records was mostly active between 1976 to 1983 – the key period for Disco and its eventual mutation into the synthesiser driven dance groove of the early 1980’s – all areas which were pioneered by Sam Records throughout its history. The label eventually passed over to Sam’s son, Michael Weiss, who by the beginning of the next decade, in 1991, was also running the hottest dance music label of it’s time, Nervous Records – the term ‘like father, like son’ has never been better demonstrated.
Fast forward to June 2012 and Harmless was happy to receive a call from Michael telling us all about his plans to reissue some key packages from the Sam catalogue. We immediately came on board and this album is one of the results of the conversation.
Our sincere thanks go out to Michael Weiss and the staff @ Nervous U.S., Jacques Renault for overseeing the project and providing a belting continuous mix and great re-edit plus Soul Clap, 6th Borough Project, Todd Terje, Maxxi Soundsystem, Andy Ash, Prince Language, Walker & Royce, Runaway, Clinton Houlker, Bonar Bradberry, Volta Bureau & Catz ‘N Dogz for providing some brilliant re-edits, all of which are perfect examples of why the Sam Records legacy continues to thrive to this very day.
This album is in memory of the late Sam Weiss, 19th September 1926 – 19th March 2008. Rest in peace Sam – this beat is yours!
