A quick bit of news for Schlockmaniacs who reside in Florida's Panhandle: the Kino Kola screening series will be presenting a fun double at the All Saints Hop Yard in Tallahassee on Saturday, May 11th. This time, the theme is Roger Corman - and the films presented will be his delightful horror-themed black comedies A Bucket Of Blood and The Little Shop Of Horrors. The Dark Comedies Of Roger Corman
Kino-Kola is back with a sinister double bill of dark comedies by legendary Hollywood outsider, Roger Corman, on Saturday, May 11th.The double bill includes A Bucket of Blood (1959) starring Dick Miller as aspiring beatnik sculptor who ham-handedly goes on a murder streak, covering his victims in clay to help bolster his newfound acclaim as an artist. This film is noted by some for its attention to detail in situating the story within the milieu of 1950’s Beat culture.The second film, The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), has grown wildly popular over the years as a cult film and milestone of pop culture. It is the very same film that inspired an off-Broadway musical by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman and later a 1986 movie adaptation of the very same musical directed by Frank Oz. The original film also includes a very early and brief performance by Jack Nicholson playing an oddball masochist obsessed with visiting his dentist.
Roger Corman’s long, illustrious career as a filmmaker of low-budget b-movies began in the 1950’s and continues to this day with such campy SyFy productions as Sharktopus and Dinocroc vs. Supergator filling out his more recent filmography. Earlier films that have ascended to cult status and in some cases critical acclaim include a series of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations starring Vincent Price from the 1960’s, Death Race 2000, Rock N’ Roll High School, Pirhana, The Wasp Woman, X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes, The Trip and many others.Corman is also noted for having jump-started the early careers of many celebrated filmmakers including Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Jack Nicholson, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante and John Sayles. The distribution arm of Corman’s company, New World Pictures, is also credited as being the first to bring the films of such acclaimed international filmmakers as Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa and Francois Truffaut to a wide North American audience.As per usual, all kino-kadets are encouraged to bring their favorite lawn chairs and/or picnic blankets to this fun night of cinema under the stars. Price of admission is $4.00, which gets you access to both movies and a complimentary bag of popcorn. The Hop Yard gates open at 8pm at which time the bar will be pouring a selection of craft beers and fine wines. Showtime begins just after sundown at 8:30pm.
